Prominent trans political activist Ellie Gomersall has announced her departure from the Scottish Greens to join the newly formed left-wing movement, Your Party, co-founded by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana.
Gomersall, who was previously selected as the second candidate on the Greens’ Glasgow regional list for the upcoming Holyrood elections, said her decision stemmed from growing frustration with the party’s leadership and its role in enabling austerity measures. “Where every single one of the existing Holyrood parties is complicit in passing on brutal cuts to public services, it’s clear to me that only Your Party can be taken seriously to stand firm against austerity and work to materially improve the lives of the working class,” she stated.
Delighted to welcome Ellie Gomersall to Your Party from the Greens!

A proud socialist and trans woman, Ellie’s leadership will be vital in the fight against austerity, for equality and for a socialist Scotland.

Her defection comes alongside three Glasgow City councillors - Dan Hutchison, Seonad Hoy and Leodhas Massie - who also left the Greens to become Your Party’s first elected representatives in Scotland. The move marks a significant moment for the fledgling party, which is still in the process of formalising its name and structure ahead of the 2026 local elections.
Gomersall, a former president of NUS Scotland and a vocal socialist, urged fellow Greens to follow her lead. “If you want to see socialists elected to our parliaments, city chambers and town halls across Scotland and the UK, join me in Your Party,” she said.
Writing on social media, Zarah Sultana MP said: "A proud socialist and trans woman, Ellie’s leadership will be vital in the fight against austerity, for equality and for a socialist Scotland."
Your Party, which has faced internal tensions between its co-founders in recent months, is expected to hold its founding conference in November, where its formal name and policy platform will be finalised.tr
