Divina de Campo to star in new musical exploring one trans woman's journey to gender-affirming surgery
Drag Race UK star Divina de Campo is set to take centre stage in a new musical exploring identity, transition and self-discovery at London's Bridge House Theatre.
Amanda – The Night Before Me, based on the true story of Sophie Giller, will run from 22 September to 10 October, with De Campo playing 14 different characters in what producers describe as an intimate yet ambitious musical monologue.
Set in the hours before a life-changing operation, the show follows Amanda as she prepares for gender-affirming surgery and reflects on the experiences, relationships and inner voices that have shaped her journey.
Through a series of characters including mothers, lovers, friends and manifestations of Amanda's inner thoughts, the production explores themes of authenticity, resilience and the pursuit of happiness.
The musical features an original score by Belgian composer Rory Six, with English lyrics by Charles Hart, best known for his work on The Phantom of the Opera and Bend It Like Beckham: The Musical.
De Campo, who rose to prominence on RuPaul's Drag Race UK and has since earned acclaim for stage roles including Hedwig and the Angry Inch, will carry the production as its sole performer.
According to the show's producers, Amanda - The Night Before Me examines "the cost of silence, the power of hidden dreams and the radiant joy of finally claiming your truth" through a blend of humour, honesty and music.
