I am writing to you en route to Liverpool, where Labour's annual conference is taking place. I’m not attending in my capacity as publisher of Scene Magazine, but as CEO of Pride Community Foundation. Party conferences provide a valuable opportunity to engage with policymakers and leaders from across the country. Next weekend, I will also be attending the Green Party conference in Brighton.
This is the first Labour conference since Andy Burnham became Prime Minister, and the first since the Equalities and Human Rights Commission’s Code of Practice came into effect for service providers, employers and other institutions, impacting the trans, non-binary and wider LGBTQ+ communities.
The day before the annual conference, Labour traditionally holds the women’s conference. This year, it excluded trans women in order to ‘comply’ with the law. This has caused fury among trade unions and transgender members of the party.
