TalkTV has apologised and agreed to pay “substantial damages” to a Northern Ireland drag performer following a defamation claim linked to a row over a children’s storytime event.
The case centres on Belfast-based actor Matthew Cavan, who performs as drag artist Cherrie Ontop. He had been taking part in a children’s storytelling session at the MAC theatre during Belfast Pride in July 2022 when the event became the focus of protests and widespread online debate.
Legal action was later brought over claims made about the performer, which were alleged to have damaged his reputation. Under the settlement, TalkTV accepted the statements had no factual basis, issued an apology and agreed to pay damages and legal costs.
The controversy around the event sparked significant attention, with protest activity and social media posts making serious allegations about drag performers. In previous legal proceedings tied to the same event, courts heard that Mr Cavan had been falsely portrayed in online material as a danger to children, leading to harassment and threats.
Mr Cavan, who has spoken publicly about the impact of the accusations, previously said he received threats and abuse after the claims were circulated, highlighting the personal toll such allegations can have.
The case comes amid wider national debate over drag events for children, which have attracted both support and opposition.
