The Politics of a Bald Head and Braces
Anybody who takes the time to get to know me will learn very quickly that I am political through and through. Sometimes though, my political beliefs aren’t obvious. I have found myself sat in taxis where the driver spends the journey talking to me about ‘dirty immigrants’.
I don’t know what it is about me that almost gives people permission to disclose their deeply held discriminatory beliefs. Is it my appearance? Do I look as though I welcome racism? I believe I am fairly ‘normal’ looking (whatever the fuck that means).
There are some however who wear their politics on their body. One such group is Skinheads. I remember when I was younger, I was almost taught to be afraid of the bald head, the braces, the jeans and the polo shirt. Skinheads weren’t really people you would randomly bump into on a Tuesday afternoon, but there was a fear of them. And I think there still is.
