SAUNA, the highly anticipated drama from Danish director Mathias Broe, will be arriving on digital platforms in the United States on 18 November 18.
Sauna tells the story of Johan, a gay man thriving in Copenhagen’s nightlife scene, whose life takes an unexpected turn when he meets William, a trans man stepping into his gender transition. Their growing love challenges societal norms around gender, identity, and relationships, exploring intimacy and human connection in a nuanced, authentic way.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, earning a Grand Jury Prize nomination (World Cinema - Dramatic), and screened at the Göteborg Film Festival, receiving critical acclaim for its compelling performances and innovative storytelling.
Broe’s inspiration for Sauna comes from both personal experience and collaboration with writer Mads Ananda Lodahl, whose acclaimed book informed the film’s narrative. “I wanted to depict a love story that feels authentic to the queer experience but resonates with anyone who’s ever loved and struggled to connect,” Broe explains.
Magnus Juhl Andersen stars as Johan, opposite rising star Nina Terese Rask as William. Their chemistry drives the emotional core of the film, set against the unique backdrop of Copenhagen’s gay sauna scene, which functions as both a refuge and a crucible for the characters’ evolving relationship.
Breaking Glass Pictures is to release SAUNA on digital platforms on 18 November; UK release date TBA!
