Małgorzata Szumowska‘s Woman Of, an affecting drama about a transgender woman in Poland – a country with a poor record on LGBTQ+ rights – will be shown at year’s Kinoteka Polish Film Festival 2024, which takes place between 6-28 March in London.
Developed from interviews with the transgender community, this groundbreaking drama from acclaimed film-making duo Małgorzata Szumowska and Michał Englert (Never Gonna Snow Again) is ambitious and heartfelt. It features Małgorzata Hajewska-Krzysztofik (Szumowska’s 33 Scenes From Life), as someone experiencing gender dysphoria, growing up in small town Poland.
A compelling narrative spanning almost 50 years, a strong performance from Joanna Kulig and emotive cinematography combine to reveal the life of struggle experienced by someone who does not conform to societal norms. Made in the spirit of Wajda, Woman of… challenges us to listen to voices not only from the trans community, but from all marginalised people.
