Mae Martin blends psychological suspense with queer identity in chilling new Netflix drama 'Wayward'
Netflix’s latest mystery series Wayward is set to make waves this autumn, with Canadian comedian and writer Mae Martin at the helm as both star and co-creator. Known for their sharp wit and emotionally resonant storytelling in Feel Good, Martin now turns their attention to darker territory - blending psychological suspense with queer identity in a chilling new drama.
Set in a seemingly idyllic coastal town, Wayward follows a group of teenagers who begin to unravel the disturbing truth behind a local cult that has long shaped the community’s values. Martin plays a therapist returning to their hometown after years away, only to find themselves drawn into a web of manipulation, trauma, and buried secrets.
The series explores themes of control, queerness, and the search for truth in environments that suppress individuality.
Martin, who identifies as non-binary and queer, has been vocal about the importance of authentic LGBTQ+ representation in media. Wayward continues this mission, featuring a diverse cast of queer characters whose stories are central to the plot rather than sidelined.
In interviews, Martin described the show as “a love letter to weird kids and outsiders,” and teased that the series will “challenge what we think of as safety, community, and truth.”
Wayward, which also stars Brandon Jay McLaren and Toni Collette, premieres on Netflix UK and US on 25 September, with all six episodes available to stream.
