There are more children than there are parents who can adopt them, according to Adoption England and Coram. To get more insight on why this might be and what the adoption process is really like, I talked to Mark and Ben, a couple who adopted their child Ava just over a year ago.
The interview was held online and began, like all online interviews do, with some technical difficulties. It was not a great start and did not help with anyone's nerves. I presume we were nervous for the same reason. Mark and Ben are not celebrities or politicians, they are just a regular couple who decided to adopt a child and succeeded. They welcomed Ava into their lives just over a year ago.
Amid the rising gap between adopters and children who need adopting,with new projections warning that there may only be enough families to meet 13% of demand by 2030 (according to Adoption England and Coram report,) Mark and Ben hope to demystify the adoption process.
Mark tells me that “For us, the only two options are really surrogacy and adoption. We have very strong feelings that there are plenty of children out there that deserve love that are living in the care system and they deserve options. it was very much our preference to go with adoption, and it felt very much like the right thing.”
