Brighton surf club launches LGBTQ+ inclusion sessions

Brighton Surf Life Saving Club (BSLSC) is running two LGBTQ+ inclusion sessions this summer as part of efforts to promote sea safety and make the club more accessible to the wider community.

The sessions are designed to break down perceived barriers to joining the club, encourage participation from LGBTQ+ residents, and provide an opportunity to learn essential lifesaving skills in a relaxed and welcoming environment. All equipment will be provided, and the club says the sessions are intended to be enjoyable as well as informative.

BSLSC trains beach lifeguards and lifesavers of all ages, and also offers opportunities to take part in lifesaving sport. While those qualifying as surf lifeguards undertake rigorous training, the club says many adult members choose to train at their own pace, valuing the camaraderie and practical skills involved in learning how to save lives.

The club said it is keen to promote membership to everyone in Brighton & Hove and hopes the introductory sessions will help attract a broader and more diverse group of members. It has also invited questions and suggestions from the local LGBTQ+ community on how best to improve inclusion.

The sessions will take place on the beach near Sea Lanes on Madeira Drive on Saturday, 20 June and Saturday, 19 July, both running from noon until 1.30pm.

Further information and free booking details are available via the club’s website at Rainbow Beach – Brighton Surf Life Saving Club, using the contact form.
