Brighton & Hove Liberal Democrats have backed a new five-point plan from the city’s LGBTQ+ venues to protect Brighton’s world-renowned queer nightlife.
The plan, unveiled by the Brighton LGBTQ+ Business Group, calls for greater investment in the LGBTQ+ Quarter: improved safety, stronger support for venues, better year-round promotion and a long-term strategy for the city’s night-time economy. The group’s proposals follow the loss of seven LGBTQ+ venues in recent years and calls for action to protect the city’s cultural and visitor economy.
Robert Brown, Liberal Democrats spokesperson for Kemptown, where these businesses are located, said: “Brighton’s LGBTQ+ venues are part of the fabric of our city. They are businesses and employers, but they are also community spaces, safe spaces and a vital part of Brighton’s identity.
“We fully support this five-point plan. The loss of LGBTQ+ venues cannot simply be accepted as inevitable. We need practical action to make the Quarter safer, support responsible businesses and ensure Brighton’s queer scene can thrive throughout the year - not just during Pride weekend.
“The Liberal Democrats will continue to work with venue operators, residents, the council and Sussex Police to make sure Brighton remains a welcoming, vibrant and safe home for its LGBTQ+ community.”
Brighton & Hove Liberal Democrats have previously called for urgent action to support the city’s struggling nightlife sector, including reform of business rates and recognition of the cumulative pressures facing pubs, clubs and LGBTQ+ venues.
