Bonnie Tyler dies aged 75: Tributes paid to Welsh music icon and Eurovision star
Tributes are being paid to Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, who has died aged 75 after a period of illness. Her family announced that the legendary performer behind Total Eclipse of the Heart, Lost in France and Holding Out for a Hero died in hospital in Portugal on 8 July.
Known for her distinctive husky voice and larger-than-life stage presence, Tyler enjoyed a career spanning five decades, becoming one of the most recognisable voices in popular music. Her family said they were “heartbroken” by her death and asked for privacy while they mourned.
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, South Wales, in 1951, Tyler rose to fame in the late 1970s before achieving global superstardom with the release of Total Eclipse of the Heart in 1983. The power ballad became an international smash hit and remains one of the defining songs of the decade.
Throughout her career, Tyler released 18 studio albums, earned multiple Grammy nominations and became one of Wales’ most successful musical exports. She continued performing well into her seventies, maintaining a devoted international fanbase.
Many Eurovision fans will remember Tyler’s appearance at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden, where she represented the UK with the song Believe in Me. Although she finished 19th, her participation brought one of Britain’s most established stars to the competition and further cemented her popularity with Eurovision audiences across Europe.
Tyler also held a special place in LGBTQ+ culture. Her soaring anthems, theatrical performances and powerful vocals made her a favourite among generations of LGBTQ+ fans, while Total Eclipse of the Heart became a staple at Pride celebrations, gay venues and community events around the world.
News of her death prompted an outpouring of grief from fans across social media, with many describing her songs as the soundtrack to key moments in their lives. Others praised her resilience, longevity and the unmistakable voice that helped define an era of popular music.
In recent months, Tyler had been recovering from emergency surgery in Portugal following a serious illness. Earlier reports indicated that she had been placed in an induced coma before later showing signs of improvement. Her family confirmed on Thursday that she died unexpectedly while receiving treatment.
