Callout for stories to document Brighton Cares legacy
A new community heritage project is calling on people in Brighton to share their memories of Brighton Cares, a charity active during the 1990s.
A new community heritage project is calling on people in Brighton to share their memories of Brighton Cares, a fundraising and support group for HIV charities in the city active during the 1990s.
Organisers are inviting contributions from anyone involved with the initiative between 1990 and 2000, including trustees, producers, performers, volunteers and beneficiaries. The appeal also extends to local businesses that supported the charity through donations or services.
The project aims to capture personal stories about the charity’s work and the wider sense of solidarity it fostered across the city. Contributors are encouraged to reflect on their roles and experiences, helping to build a fuller picture of Brighton Cares’ impact during a pivotal decade.
Those with memories or materials to share are asked to get in touch directly via email to contribute to the archive: roni@marlboroughproductions.org.uk.
By gathering first-hand accounts, the organisers hope to preserve an important chapter in Brighton’s community history, highlighting how collective action and mutual support shaped local responses to social challenges at the time.
Recording community-led responses from the 1990s preserves vital LGBTQ+ history, particularly around grassroots care, activism and solidarity during the HIV and AIDS crisis.

Scene was founded in Brighton in 1993, at a time when news stories about Pride protests were considered radical.
Since then, Scene has remained proudly independent, building a platform for queer voices. Every subscription helps us to report on the stories that matter to LGBTQ+ people across the UK and beyond.
Your support funds our journalists and contributes to Pride Community Foundation’s grant-making and policy work.
