Worcester LGBT condemns recent 'Unite the Kingdom' protest

Worcester LGBT has issued a strong condemnation of the recent 'Unite the Kingdom' protest led by far-right activist Tommy Robinson in central London, warning of a "growing fear" among immigrants, Muslims, and LGBTQ+ individuals in the wake of the event.
The protest, which drew an estimated 110,000 people to Whitehall on Saturday, was billed by organisers as the UK’s largest-ever free speech rally. However, it has sparked widespread concern among human rights groups and community organisations, including Worcester LGBT, which supports LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and refugees across the UK.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Worcester LGBT said: “These movements often promote anti-immigration, anti-Muslim, and anti-LGBTQ+ views that threaten the safety, dignity, and human rights of many of the people we support. We are seeing growing fear among immigrants, Muslims, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Many in our community are feeling unsafe - and they are right to be concerned.”
The group described the protest as part of a “global pattern of scapegoating, division, and dehumanisation,” and called for “solidarity, compassion, and collective action” in response.
Despite organisers urging peaceful conduct, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that at least nine people were arrested during the event, with officers facing “unacceptable violence” including kicks, punches, and the throwing of flares and bottles. Police said more arrests are expected as investigations continue.
The rally featured speeches from Robinson, former actor Laurence Fox, and controversial figures such as Katie Hopkins and Elon Musk, who appeared via video link. Musk reportedly called for the “dissolution of Parliament” and described the political left as “the party of murder”.
A counter-protest organised by Stand Up To Racism drew around 5,000 participants, including MP Diane Abbott, who emphasised the importance of standing against fascism and supporting asylum seekers.
Worcester LGBT’s statement concluded with a call to action: “In these times of rising hostility, our response must be clear: solidarity, compassion, and collective action.”
The group continues to provide vital support to LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly those seeking asylum, and has urged the public to remain vigilant and united against hate.
