Werk of Nature: Drag queens make a bid for Christmas no.1 with nature-inspired club banger
Winner of RuPaul's Drag Race vs. The World, Tia Kofi - together with drag royalty Lill, Banksie, Liquorice Black and Actavia - rallied together to unveil a giant armadillo mural in Manchester, home to one of the UK’s most vibrant drag scenes, in support of global icon Bob the Drag Queen and his new track Giant Armadillo.
Emmy-winning entertainer and global LGBTQ+ icon Bob the Drag Queen has teamed up with charity On the Edge to release the unique Christmas single to support conservation efforts and prevent the species from becoming endangered.
Entering the race for Christmas #1, the high-energy rap anthem is launching alongside new research which shows that nearly a third of Gen Z feel disconnected with the natural world. In addition, 63% say they want to know more but don’t know where to start. When pushed further on their knowledge of natural history, 47% of Gen Z said a ‘Hannah Conda’ was an animal, when in fact it’s the name of an Australian drag queen.
More than one in three (36%) said that caring about or being knowledgeable of nature isn’t considered ‘cool’ and 73% said they would watch more nature content if it was more exciting.
The survey of more than 2,500 UK adults highlights Gen Z’s nature-knowledge gap – a gap On the Edge is bridging by blending natural history with pop culture.
Giant Armadillo kickstarts On the Edge’s second Werk of Nature series – a successful programme the organisation introduced at the start of the year, blending the magic of nature with the global pop culture phenomenon of Drag.
Having previously collaborated with Drag Race royalty such as Mo Heart and Heidi N Closet, Werk of Nature is all about connecting people the natural world – and what better way to reach them than via their social media feeds and Spotify playlists!
Released via Sounds Right, the song features NATURE as an artist and all royalties go back to support conservation efforts.
Beth Blood, CEO and Founder of On the Edge, says, “We’re hoping ‘Giant Armadillo’ helps engage people by invoking a sense of curiosity, fun and interest in nature. This series is not only about raising attention for the Giant Armadillo, but for all overlooked species in the animal kingdom.
"Across our content, we want people to see, appreciate and fall in love with the nature that's all around them.”
Speaking about their involvement in the campaign, Bob the Drag Queen says: “As a drag queen, I can find a lot in common with the giant armadillo, a creature that I knew nothing about until a few months ago. Drag celebrates uniqueness and trust me... there's a lotta uniqueness going on with this animal. Listen to the song to find out!”
Giant Armadillo is available to stream from today across all major UK streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music.
A mural of a giant armadillo celebrating the song and On the Edge’s mission of awareness and conservation support will be available at the iconic Northern Quarter in Manchester until Sunday, 14 December.
