Organisers of Reading Pride have issued an appeal to the public to save the annual event, which faces a significant funding shortfall that is threatening its future.
Like many Pride events across the UK, Reading Pride has been hit hard by a combination of rising costs, dwindling sponsorship, and a shortage of volunteers. The festival, which has become a cornerstone of the local LGBTQ+ calendar, requires over £110,000 each year to stage. Despite the tireless efforts of its volunteer committee, the event is currently facing a £30,000 deficit just weeks before it is due to take place.
Support from local businesses and organisations has dropped by half compared to previous years, prompting organisers to speak out. “We’ve always prided ourselves on being transparent with our community,” a spokesperson said. “Reading Pride is more than just a celebration - it’s a vital platform for visibility, support, and connection.”
The festival not only showcases local talent and supports charities and small businesses, but also provides a safe and inclusive space for thousands of attendees.
Despite the financial strain, organisers have confirmed that this year’s event will go ahead as planned. However, they are urging the public to step up and help secure its future.
Last year, only around 20% of the estimated 11,000 attendees donated the suggested £3 at the gate. This year, organisers are asking for a £4 donation from those who are able to contribute. “It’s a small amount for a full day of entertainment,” they said, highlighting the event’s three stages, sports area, family zone, over 100 stalls, fairground attractions, and diverse food and drink offerings.
Reading Pride is encouraging supporters to get involved in several ways:
- Donate Online: A GoFundMe campaign is live and accepting contributions.
- Gate Donations: Attendees are asked to give £4 upon entry, via card or cash.
- Pride Plus: For £25, supporters can enjoy dedicated seating and shelter.
- Corporate Support: Local businesses are urged to contribute what they can.
- Volunteer: Help is needed both on the day and behind the scenes.
