LET THE DOLLS PLAY: Goal Diggers FC launches friendly tournament in solidarity with trans players amid FA’s “cruel and cowardly ban”

Goal Diggers FC (GDFC), a non-ability womxn and non-binary football club in London, is inviting other trans and gender non-conforming, inclusive clubs to play in a friendly tournament on the first day of Pride Month, 1 June.

The football club said on Instagram: “Join us on the 1 June to celebrate our incredible grassroots community and our trans teammates and to stand in solidarity against the FA’s cruel and cowardly ban.”

The FA announced on 1 May that trans women will be banned from playing women’s football in England from next season, despite announcing in April that trans women could continue to play on conditions they meet “stricter eligibility criteria”.

The FA said the move, which will apply to all levels of the game and will be implemented from 1 June, follows the Supreme Court anti-trans ruling that a “woman” is defined by biological sex.

Location of the tournament is TBC as GDFC works out gendered facilities and provisions across the pitches it currently uses.
