Jonathan Bailey, who will soon be starring in blockbuster Jurassic World Rebirth, says he’s had to “unlearn the idea of feeling limited” as a gay actor in Hollywood. The 37-year-old star, known for his roles in Bridgerton and the Wicked films, has faced significant challenges in the entertainment industry but is now seeing a shift.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Bailey shared: “You have to unlearn a lot of narratives about yourself that the industry tells you.” He acknowledged that being openly gay once meant being excluded from straight roles — and that there were few gay roles to begin with. “That’s obviously changed, massively,” he added.

Bailey credited older generations of actors for paving the way and breaking down barriers. Now, he’s committed to continuing that progress, including taking on a lead role in Jurassic World Rebirth. “There are moments where you have to be excellent just to prove you can do it,” he said. “There’s the weight of history, and so many brilliant people before me who’ve changed perceptions of sexuality. Any prejudice is something to fight against — and what better way than by playing any kind of character?”

Reflecting on his journey from child actor with the Royal Shakespeare Company to international star, Bailey said, “I’ve unlearned the idea of feeling limited.”

Meanwhile, Bailey recently addressed speculation about becoming the next James Bond. Speaking on The Scott Mills Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, he admitted, “I don’t know… it would be hard to say no.” While he’s unsure if he’d take the role, he’s confident the next Bond film will be “exciting” no matter who is cast.
