Not your typical literary festival! Brighton Book Festival to launch on Friday, June 24

The inaugural Brighton Book Festival launches on Friday, June 24 and runs till Sunday, June 26 with 15 events held in four central Brighton venues.

Run by local booksellers Afrori Books and the Feminist Bookshop, this grassroots festival is not your typical literary festival – it targets a younger, socially aware audience and has an inclusive ethos, accessible events and is community minded.

Its mission is to promote access to diverse literature: connect readers to books they can see themselves in; widen participation: reach and engage audiences in Brighton, many who would not usually attend literary events; and improve author representation: model a festival where authors of all backgrounds are given equal platforms and pay.

Speakers over the course of the festival, include: Juno Dawson, Dorothy Koomson, Josephine Hall, ALFO the Poet, Venessa Taylor, Alison Rumfitt and Fox Fisher. For the full line-up, CLICK HERE

Scene was founded in Brighton in 1993, at a time when news stories about Pride protests were considered radical.

Since then, Scene has remained proudly independent, building a platform for queer voices. Every subscription helps us to report on the stories that matter to LGBTQ+ people across the UK and beyond.

Your support funds our journalists and contributes to Pride Community Foundation’s grant-making and policy work.
