Gender-critical Green Party councillor booted from party

Dr Pallavi Devulapalli, a West Norfolk councillor and former Green Party parliamentary candidate, has been expelled from the party following a nine-month investigation into comments she made about trans issues during a 2024 election hustings.

Dr Devulapalli, who was the party’s national health spokesperson at the time, expressed support for the much-criticised Cass Review, which recommended halting hormone treatments for minors with gender dysphoria. She also voiced concerns about the promotion of gender ideology and advocated for sex-based rights.

The Green Party stated her expulsion was necessary to “avoid or reduce the likelihood of further harm to the party.” Dr Devulapalli, now sitting as an independent, criticised the decision, accusing the party of acting "like a cult" which was suppressing scientific belief.

She contrasted her treatment with that of Norwich councillor Charlie Caine, who faced no disciplinary action after being accused of verbally abusing women at a vigil. The party said Caine had not been a formal member at the time of the incident.

Dr Devulapalli claims the disciplinary process lacked transparency and denied her the right to appeal. She also noted the party cited her attendance at a local Green event while suspended as part of the reason for her expulsion.

The Green Party declined to comment on individual cases but emphasised its commitment to a robust disciplinary process.
