Blackpool Council hails success of LGBTQ+ ‘Be You’ initiative
An LGBTQ+ support and inclusion initiative launched in Blackpool is proving a “huge hit” with residents and visitors, according to Blackpool Council.
The programme, known as Be You, was introduced to promote equality, visibility and wellbeing for LGBTQ+ people across the town. Council leaders say the initiative has been warmly received and is helping to reinforce Blackpool’s reputation as an inclusive and welcoming destination.
Blackpool Council said Be You has supported a range of activities aimed at celebrating diversity and providing safe spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals, while also encouraging wider community understanding and acceptance.
A council spokesperson said the initiative had attracted strong engagement and positive feedback since its launch.
We want Blackpool to be a place where everyone feels they belong.
“Be You is about making sure everyone in Blackpool feels safe, respected and able to be themselves,” the spokesperson said. “The response we’ve seen so far shows just how important this work is to our communities.”
The council added that the initiative aligns with its broader equality and inclusion priorities, as well as its efforts to support mental health, community cohesion and civic pride.
Local businesses, community groups and voluntary organisations have also been involved in supporting the programme, with the council saying collaboration had been key to its early success.
Councillors said the town’s long-standing links with LGBTQ+ culture and tourism made Be You a natural fit for Blackpool, which has hosted Pride events and LGBTQ+ venues for decades.
The authority said it would continue to build on the initiative, with further activities and partnerships planned in the coming months.
“We want Blackpool to be a place where everyone feels they belong,” the spokesperson added. “Be You is helping us move closer to that goal.”
