Armistead Maupin to celebrate 50 years of Tales of the City at London literary event

Acclaimed author Armistead Maupin will mark the 50th anniversary of his groundbreaking novel Tales of the City with a special evening at The Conversation, London’s newest literary talks programme. The event takes place on Tuesday, 10 February at St Martin-in-the-Fields.

For one night only, Maupin will present 50 Years on Barbary Lane, reflecting on his iconic series that captured the vibrancy of LGBTQ+ life in 1970s San Francisco. He will explore the cultural impact of his beloved characters, including Anna Madrigal, the trailblazing trans landlady of 28 Barbary Lane, who became a queer icon and was portrayed by Jen Richards and Oscar-winning actress Olympia Dukakis in television adaptations.

Maupin’s literary legacy extends beyond Tales of the City to works such as More Tales of the CityFurther Tales of the CityMaybe the Moon, and The Night Listener, which was adapted into a feature film starring Robin Williams and Toni Collette.

The Conversation, curated by former Hay Festival Director and Booker Prize Chair Peter Florence, runs every Tuesday evening until 28 April, featuring leading thinkers, writers, scientists and historians tackling major social, political and environmental issues.

Following the talk, guests will have the rare opportunity to join Maupin for an intimate supper. The ticket includes a welcome glass of fizz, a two-course dinner, a signed copy of his memoir Logical Family, and the chance to hear more from the celebrated author.
