Brighton & Hove will mark Zero HIV Stigma Day, with a powerful community event aimed at education, solidarity, and action, on Monday, 21 July.

Taking place from 1–2pm at Jubilee Square, the event will feature a lively pop-up hosted by Sally Vate, Brighton’s beloved drag queen and performer. Attendees can expect live performancesinspiring speakerscommunity engagement, and complimentary food and drink - all in the spirit of challenging the stigma still faced by people living with HIV.

The day also sees the Martin Fisher Foundation Bus travelling along the Number 7 route, spreading messages of awareness and acceptance. Locals are encouraged to wave, snap a photo, and share on social media using #ZeroHIVStigmaDay.

Zero HIV Stigma Day is held annually on 21 July in honour of Prudence Nobantu Mabele, the first South African woman to publicly disclose her HIV status. Her courage continues to inspire global efforts to end discrimination.

Despite medical advances, stigma remains a pressing issue. In the UK, recent figures show that:

  • 31% of people living with HIV feel lonely or isolated,
  • 10% have experienced verbal harassment,
  • 9% are afraid to be in public spaces.
