A planned Drag Bingo event aimed at celebrating inclusivity and raising funds for child advocacy has been cancelled following a wave of online backlash, prompting widespread disappointment and concern from LGBTQ+ advocates and allies.

The event, scheduled for 11 August and hosted by beloved drag performer Mrs Kasha Davis - known for her appearances on RuPaul’s Drag Race - was organised by the Child Advocacy Center of Greater Rochester (CAC). It was intended as a family-friendly fundraiser to support vulnerable children and promote community engagement. However, after a barrage of negative social media comments, the CAC made the decision to cancel the event.

If you didn’t want to attend a drag bingo, all you had to do was not show up.

Critics of the event claimed it was “wildly inappropriate,” with some suggesting that hosting a drag show under the banner of child protection crossed a line. In response, Mrs Kasha Davis, whose real name is Ed Popil, expressed deep disappointment, stating, “The negativity that happens online is prominent… We’re letting hate win.”

Popil, who has long championed age-appropriate drag performances and regularly hosts drag story hours for children, emphasised that drag is a diverse art form - much like theatre or music - with styles suitable for all audiences. “There’s a place for everyone on this earth,” they said. “If you didn’t want to attend a drag bingo, all you had to do was not show up.”

The CAC released a statement acknowledging the pain and frustration felt by LGBTQ+ supporters, affirming their commitment to inclusivity and support for all children and families, including LGBTQ+ youth. “We are listening. We are learning,” said interim CEO Mary Whittier. “We remain committed to being a place where all children and families - regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or background - feel seen, safe, and supported.”
