Founded by QueerAF, Trans+ History Week (5 – 11 May 2025) exists to teach and celebrate the rich and long history of trans, non-binary, gender diverse, and intersex people. It is a time to reflect and educate on trans history and identities. As the organisers say, “knowledge of our past is absolutely fundamental for our future liberation”.
At a time where anti-trans rhetoric is on the rise and hate crimes against trans people have risen by 186% in the last five years, Trans+ History Week seeks to uplift the trans community, and send a clear message: trans people have always been here.
Trans+ History Week is dedicated to celebrating the rich history of transgender, non-binary, gender-diverse, and intersex individuals through stories, events and lesson books for the whole world to use. It is a QueerAF launchpad project and an independent trans+ led CIC run by a team of volunteers.
Trans+ History Day (6 May) marks the day the Nazis raided the world’s first trans clinic and four days later burned the precious research.
QueerAF runs the official content and mentoring of creatives for the week while supporting the initiative’s events and working with international partners to deliver a global impact. Organisers add: “Information is a tool for liberation, and learning lessons from history helps us win the fight today.”
