Girls creator and American Horror Story actress Lena Dunham stood up for trans rights outside of the US Capitol on Trans Day of Visibility at an event which criticised Donald Trump and his administration over targeting trans communities.

Dunham honoured her trans brother while speaking at the rally, saying: “When my sister came out as trans, I learned that I actually never had a sister at all, but a wise, funny, resilient, powerful, remarkable brother.

“Trans liberation is our liberation. And without it, none of us are free. As I’ve watched my trans loved ones come into their own truth, it was as if I went from perceiving only primary colours to a whole rainbow of subtle shades. From seeing flat images to looking at the world in 4D,” she said.

The rally was hosted by the Christopher Street Project, which “builds and leverages political power to make equity a reality for transgender people across the country”.

Most of the event was targeted around US President Donald Trump and his administration for attacking diversity and other negative decisions against the transgender people in recent times.

Dunham concluded adding, “We love you. We see you. We bow down to your charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. Trans lives don’t just matter. They transform the world into a place of possibility, joy, and discovery.”

Later, Dunham reflected on the public appearance on Instagram, writing: “Speaking at the rally for Trans Day of Visibility organised by @christopherstreetproject yesterday was a total pleasure and honour. We stood in front of the capital celebrating a community that has meant more to me than Instagram allows characters for.

“It’s a privilege to get a chance to share the love and joy being in family and community with trans people has given, and to hear these politicians, leaders and organisers offer tangible ways to protect our trans loved ones right now,” the actress continued. “The crowd and leadership were so inspiring- the youth really will save us, and the elders will show us the way.”
