Trans actress, comedian and content creator Dylan Mulvaney has joined the line-up of Charleston Festival in East Sussex for a special premiere performance of The Charleston Monologue: I thought this would feel good.
The new commission, written by the acclaimed writer and performer Travis Alabanza in the month leading up to the festival, will be performed on Saturday, 24 May and directed by Tatenda Shamiso. It will be followed by a discussion with the writer, chaired by actor and broadcaster, Russell Tovey.
Dylan Mulvaney has captivated over one billion viewers across social media with the groundbreaking series Days of Girlhood. Named Forbes’ 30 Under 30, Out 100, and Attitude Magazine’s Woman of the Year for 2023, Dylan is a vibrant voice for trans and queer visibility. Dylan continues to push the boundaries of what it means to tell honest, urgent queer stories onstage.

From her celebrated solo musical FAGHAG at Edinburgh Fringe to her recent West End debut in We Are Not Kids Anymore at the Savoy Theatre, Dylan continues to bring powerful, personal storytelling to the stage. Now, she brings that same authenticity to Travis Alabanza’s Charleston Monologue — a bold and resonant piece that challenges assumptions and tests boundaries.
Melissa Perkins, Head of Programme and Events at Charleston, said: “Charleston has a long tradition of resistance, supporting radical artists and thinkers and welcoming queer communities. As a festival we are committed to keeping the spirit of the Bloomsbury Group alive.
“We look forward to welcoming Dylan Mulvaney who will deliver the annual Charleston Monologue by trans writer Travis Albanza which explores one of the most complex and polarised issues of our times.”
