The first episode of a new LGBTQ+ podcast, The View From Here has dropped today (26 November). The podcast interviews leading campaigners, activists and celebrities who have led the charge for LGBTQ+ rights in the UK, over a series of long-form interviews. The podcast’s interviewees have each taken centre-stage, driving progress on LGBTQ+ rights from the 1950s to the present day, fighting heroically for the rights and acceptance the community enjoys today.
Each episode takes on a distinctly emotional and personal direction, discussing life as well as activism. Through powerful, joyful, and deeply personal conversations, the interviews explore issues around homophobia and hate crime, conversion therapy, police brutality and self-harm, as well as discussing activism, direct action and legal changes. The podcast captures the courage and passion behind the fight for equality, reminding us how far we’ve come and why these stories matter now more than ever.
Jonathan Chambers, co-host of the podcast said: “I’ve always been astonished by how moving it is to hear the stories of the many courageous activists who risked everything in very different times to advance many of the rights that our community enjoys today. This podcast exists to celebrate and illuminate these stories and bring them to a wider audience.
“At a time when LGBTQ+ rights seem to be going in reverse, it’s absolutely vital that we inspire a new generation of activists who recognise how hard our community has fought, how precious our rights are, and how easily they can be taken from us.”
James Alexander, the podcast’s other co-host said: “I’ve been inspired, angered and amazed by the incredible stories we’ve heard recording this podcast. The stories of hardship, courage and endurance told by our guests regularly leave us in tears. I’m so pleased we can bring these incredible stories to a wider audience.”
