The highly anticipated biographical drama Christy, starring Sydney Sweeney and Ben Foster, will arrive in UK and Irish cinemas on 28 November. Directed by David Michôd (Animal Kingdom, The King), the film tells the extraordinary true story of Christy Martin, a trailblazing figure in women’s boxing whose rise to fame in the 1990s was as dramatic outside the ring as it was inside.

Martin became one of the most recognisable female boxers in the world, fighting not only opponents in the ring but also personal battles involving identity, family, and an abusive relationship with her trainer-turned-husband, Jim Martin. The film also explores her struggle to embrace her sexuality in a time and environment where being openly gay was fraught with risk, adding another layer to her fight for survival and self-acceptance.
Sweeney, best known for her roles in Euphoria and Anyone But You, underwent months of intense training and a significant physical transformation to portray Martin. Ben Foster co-stars as Jim Martin, with Merritt Wever and Katy O’Brian in supporting roles.

Christy premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and was showcased at the BFI London Film Festival in October as a Headline Gala. Despite a modest start at the US box office earlier this month, the film has earned critical praise for Sweeney’s performance, which is already generating awards-season buzz.
