Brighton’s newly opened LGBTQ+ community hub, the Ledward Centre, will be hosting a major exhibition from November 21 till December 9, featuring 30 years of photos and memorabilia from HIV charity the Sussex Beacon.
Brighton’s newly opened LGBTQ+ community hub, the Ledward Centre (TLC), will be hosting a major exhibition from November 21 till December 9, featuring 30 years of photos and memorabilia from HIV charity the Sussex Beacon.
Bill Puddicombe, executive director of the Sussex Beacon said “We’re delighted to have the opportunity to work with TLC to stage this exhibition. In this, our 30th Anniversary year, we have many stories to share, ranging from the initial funding and construction of our main centre, VIP visits and support, through to service user experiences and endorsements.
“We hope many people will take the opportunity to visit the exhibition, to see how important and valued the Beacon is within the community, supporting people living with HIV”.
The Ledward Centre has been developed in honour of the late James Ledward, former editor of Gscene (now Scene) magazine, who tirelessly raised awareness of HIV and AIDS, raised money to support local HIV and AIDS charities and drove forward the establishment of the Brighton AIDS Memorial – created by Romany Mark Bruce (a former vice chair and trustee of the Sussex Beacon) – which stands in the city’s New Steine Gardens. He was a much-loved figure who was always the heart of the LGBTQ community.
Duncan Lustig-Prean, centre director at TLC, added “The Sussex Beacon has been a vital part of healthcare services for people living with HIV for three decades, and we are honoured to be helping mark this incredible milestone with this exhibition of works. This is what TLC is all about: reaching out to our communities and the organisations that work so hard to support us and providing a space for us all.”
