Strictly Come Dancing star and LGBTQ+ advocate Johannes Radebe has joined forces with MADE.com to completely transform LGBTQ+ community shelter, centre and domestic abuse refuge, The Outside Project.
The Outside Project is one of the first ever LGBTQ+ charities to focus on trans and gender non-conforming people. The space is a diverse centre that was created in response to those within the LGBTQ+ community who feel endangered, who are homeless, experience ‘hidden’ homelessness and feel that they are on the outside of services due to historical and present prejudice in society and in their homes.
With recent research showing that over 30% of homeless youth in the UK are LGBTQ+, it has never been more important to support community centres providing safe spaces.
Together Johannes and MADE.com have totally transformed The Outside Project to reinstate it as a safe and welcoming place for the community to use and enjoy. A clear message that LGBTQ+ people deserve to not only survive, but thrive.
Speaking about his involvement in the project, Johannes Radebe said “Over the past couple of years we have all come to appreciate our homes more. For queer people, a home isn’t always a safe environment and therefore places like The Outside Project are invaluable resources. That’s why I’ve been delighted to join forces with MADE.com to create a warming and welcoming community centre for all its users.”
Jesse Ashman, Partnerships Manager at The Outside Project, added: “We are so excited by the transformation of the space, I love the colour and vibrancy that MADE.com and Johannes have injected. It was really important for all the community centre users that the centre kept some of its original features whilst also feeling refreshed and homely, MADE.com and Johannes have done just that.”
The centre’s creative concept focuses on bright pops of bold colour and print layered over a more neutral base of natural rattans and woods. This creates a domestic and relaxed feeling environment which the various users of the space can adapt to their needs. Find out more about behind the design here.
