Stephen Fry says JK Rowling is a "lost cause" who has been "radicalised by TERFS"

Sir Stephen Fry has publicly distanced himself from renowned TERF JK Rowling, expressing deep concern over her views on trans issues. Speaking on The Show People podcast, Fry described Rowling as “a lost cause,” suggesting she has been “radicalised by TERFs” (trans-exclusionary radical feminists) and hardened by the backlash she’s received.
His comments offer some clarify after he was criticised for calling Stonewall’s approach to trans issues ‘nonsensical’ in December 2024.
Fry, who is openly gay, said he used to enjoy Rowling’s company but now finds her views “strange” and “inflammatory.” He criticised her for not condemning harmful rhetoric from her supporters and for making statements that he believes contribute to a hostile environment for trans people.
“I profoundly disagree with her,” Fry said. “She has made cruel and mocking remarks that add to the distress of trans individuals. I’m angry she hasn’t disavowed the more violent and destructive voices aligned with her.”
He also addressed the broader cultural climate, noting the high rates of mental health struggles and suicide among trans people. While calling for compassion and understanding, Fry warned against labeling everyone who disagrees as a “transphobe,” urging a more effective and empathetic approach to advocacy.
This marks a shift from Fry’s earlier stance of neutrality. In 2022, he had called for dialogue and mutual understanding, saying he didn’t want to abandon friendships, including with Rowling. However, he now says the situation has changed significantly.
The comments come in the wake of a UK Supreme Court ruling that defined “woman” in legal terms as “biological female,” a decision celebrated by Rowling but criticised by trans rights advocates. Fry expressed sadness over the fallout, saying, “I always liked her company… but this has changed how she engages with the world.”
Fry joins other Harry Potter stars like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint in publicly supporting the trans community, while others, like Tom Felton, have chosen to remain neutral.
