Sappho Events will celebrate its firth birthday on 17 November - a milestone moment for the LGBTQ+ company that runs social events for queer women, trans and non-binary people across the UK - with a new home for its events at London’s newest LGBTQ+ venue, Betty & Joan’s.

Sappho Events will run six monthly events at the new South London venue, including speed dating, book club, board game night, queer tarot workshop, craft classes, and sip n’stitch. Additionally, a monthly speed friending event will continue running online, welcoming the queer community to make new friends UK-wide.

Since its inception, Sappho Events has run over 250 events for over 5,000 queer people, including pop-ups in Bristol, Manchester, York and Edinburgh. The company was created to build community among queer women, trans and non-binary people by bringing people together over common interests in non-alcohol fuelled environments.
Maryann Wright, Sappho Events' founder and director, said: “When I first moved to London, I found it difficult to connect with the LGBTQ+ community to make friends because I wasn’t into clubbing, and the prospect of going to a gay bar by myself was daunting.
"Sappho Events is the company I wish existed back then and I am incredibly proud that we are still serving our community by connecting people together over common interests. Partnering with Betty & Joan’s has been a godsend, as now we can have a central, accessible home to bring all our events together under the one roof.

“Wherever you are in your LGBTQ+ journey - whether you’re questioning, coming out, in the closet, or out and proud, Sappho Events is a safe, welcoming and inclusive space for you. If you’re looking to make new friends, find love, share common interests, or just have a good chat, our social events will give you space to be your authentic self and have fun.”
Betty & Joan’s is South London’s newest, fully-accessible gay bar, located in the heart of the new Elephant Park, less than five minutes walk from Elephant & Castle Station in Zone 1.
