Sabrina Carpenter hails ‘vital’ role of queer fans ahead of Coachella headline slot
Sabrina Carpenter has praised the power and influence of queer audiences, describing them as central to the success of modern pop music as she prepares for a major appearance at Coachella.
Speaking in conversation with Marc Jacobs for Perfect Magazine, the singer made a series of candid remarks about the role of LGBTQ+ fans in shaping the industry.
“I don’t think pop music would exist without queer people,” she said. “It’s quite literally the backbone of it.”
Carpenter added that her own career has been deeply intertwined with the community, both creatively and personally.
“A lot of the people I love, work with and admire are part of the queer community,” she explained. “That’s always been such a huge part of my life and my career.”
The Espresso singer went on to acknowledge the energy and loyalty of queer audiences in particular, suggesting they bring a unique force to live performances.
“There’s such a sense of freedom and expression in those spaces,” she said. “It’s something you feel immediately when you’re performing.”
Her comments come as anticipation builds for her upcoming Coachella set, widely expected to be one of the standout performances of the festival. Carpenter has hinted that the show will mark a new level of ambition in her live work.
Reflecting on her relationship with fans, she added: “I feel very lucky to have an audience that allows me to be myself and celebrates that.”
Carpenter’s remarks echo long-standing recognition within the music industry of the LGBTQ+ community’s cultural influence - not only as a fanbase, but as tastemakers, creatives and drivers of pop’s evolution.
Her appearance at Coachella is set to underline her growing global status, as she continues to cement her place among pop’s leading figures.
