Amanda Clare, a councillor for Reform UK, has pleaded not guilty to charges of assaulting a security guard and damaging property during Winsford’s Pride celebration on 28 June.
Ms Clare, who represents Winsford Dene on Cheshire West and Chester Council, appeared at Chester Magistrates’ Court where she denied assaulting Richard Welsh, a security professional working at the event, and damaging his camera. She claimed her actions were in self-defence.
The incident occurred during Winsford Pride, a community-led event celebrating LGBTQ+ inclusion and visibility. Cheshire Constabulary responded to reports of a “disturbance” at around 4.30pm.
Following the allegations, Ms Clare was suspended from her role working for Reform MP Sarah Pochin, who represents Runcorn and Helsby. A spokesperson for Ms Pochin stated: “We were made aware of serious allegations involving a member of staff. She was immediately suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
"We maintain a zero-tolerance approach to any form of disorderly or inappropriate conduct. While we respect the right to a fair hearing, it would not be appropriate for the individual to continue in her role at this time.”
Ms Clare has had a varied political history, having previously been elected as a Labour councillor in 2019 before moving through several parties, including the Socialist Labour Party, the Party of Women and the Winsford Salt of the Earth Party, before becoming an Independent in 2024. She joined Reform UK in March 2025.
In a joint statement, Cheshire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service reminded the public that the case is ongoing: “Ms Clare is entitled to a fair trial. It is crucial that there is no reporting or online commentary that could prejudice the legal process.”
Judge John McGarva granted Ms Clare bail on the condition that she does not contact Mr Welsh. The case has been adjourned until December and will be heard at Chester Crown Court.
