A queer-owned bookshop in Massachusetts is set to host a “wedding marathon” on 30 August, offering LGBTQ+ couples the chance to tie the knot quickly and affordably amid growing concerns over the future of same-sex marriage rights in the United States.

All She Wrote Books, located in Somerville, is organising the event under the banner Love Can’t Wait Another Day, in response to a pending US Supreme Court decision on whether to hear a case that could potentially overturn the landmark 2015 ruling that legalised same-sex marriage nationwide.

The clock could be ticking on LGBTQ+ marriage rights.

The event will run from 1 - 5 p.m. and is designed to allow multiple couples to marry in quick succession, bypassing the cost and delay of traditional ceremonies. For $500 (approximately £370), couples receive a private one-hour ceremony with a Justice of the Peace, professional photographs, cupcakes, a celebratory toast, a wedding gift from the store, and guidance on replicating legal documents in case marriage equality is rolled back.

Shop owner Christina Pascucci-Ciampa said the initiative is a proactive response to the uncertainty facing LGBTQ+ rights: “We can’t believe it’s come to this, but the clock could be ticking on LGBTQ+ marriage rights. We’re not interested in waiting to see what happens, and neither is our community. That’s why we’re creating space for folks to say ‘I do’ ASAP'”.

Couples can bring up to 12 guests or opt for an intimate ceremony. The bookshop, which has previously served as a queer wedding venue, is also offering support for couples concerned about the legal implications of a potential Supreme Court reversal.
