Queer Britain, the UK’s only LGBTQ+ museum, will present an exhibition on Jimmy Somerville and Bronski Beat, launching March 13 and running till May 25.
In 1984 Jimmy Somerville’s first band, Bronski Beat released their debut album, The Age of Consent. The album title was a response to the age of consent for gay men which at the time was 21 in the United Kingdom. For heterosexual relationships the age of consent was 16.

This exhibition, which presents a new set of materials donated by Jimmy Somerville to Queer Britain’s collection, includes T-Shirts from the ACT-UP campaign, a customised Levi’s jacket, hand typed lyrics to Bronski Beat track Screaming and promotional posters for Smalltown Boy.
In the screening room, Queer Britain will present the short documentary Why? (2024), which is a reimagined video for Bronski Beat’s enduring LGBTQ+ anthem originally released in 1984.

Scene was founded in Brighton in 1993, at a time when news stories about Pride protests were considered radical. Since then, Scene has remained proudly independent, building a platform for queer voices. Every subscription helps us to report on the stories that matter to LGBTQ+ people across the UK and beyond.
Your support funds our journalists and contributes to Pride Community Foundation’s grant-making and policy work.
