One of the world’s busiest airports, Chicago O’Hare International Airport, could become the first to house a gay bar.

As part of a major renovation of Terminal 1, airport officials invited bids for new concession spaces. Among the submissions is a standout proposal: a bar branded with the name of Sidetrack, Chicago’s largest and longest-running LGBTQ+ bar.

Founded in 1982, Sidetrack has become a cornerstone of Chicago’s LGBTQ+ community. The proposal seeks to bring the Sidetrack experience to O’Hare, and the bar’s owners are thrilled by the opportunity.

“We’re just blown away by the idea,” co-owner Art Johnston told the Chicago Tribune. “With the number of people who pass through O’Hare every day, this is a chance to show that LGBTQ+ spaces are welcoming, inclusive, and part of everyday life. We’re not here to scare anyone - we’re here to live our lives and make the world better for everyone.”

The proposed venue would be open to all travellers, regardless of orientation. “You don’t have to be gay to enjoy the bar,” González emphasised.

With hundreds of applications submitted for the new concessions, it may be several months before a decision is made. If approved, Sidetrack would serve passengers from airlines including United and Lufthansa - Terminal 1 handles around 400 flights and over 40,000 passengers daily.
