Netflix has dropped the first teaser for its upcoming series Boots, a gritty yet heartfelt coming-of-age dramedy set in the 1990s U.S. Marine Corps. Premiering globally on 9 October, the eight-part show promises to be one of the most compelling queer narratives of the year.

At the heart of Boots is Cameron Cope, played by 13 Reasons Why star Miles Heizer. Cameron is a closeted, disillusioned teenager who enlists in the Marines alongside his straight best friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), the son of a decorated Marine. The series explores their journey through boot camp, where they face both physical trials and emotional reckonings, all while navigating the harsh realities of military life under the shadow of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

The teaser opens with Cameron declaring, “My life needs a change, sir. I want to be somebody else,” to a recruiter who warns, “In 13 weeks, you won’t even recognise yourself.” From there, viewers are plunged into the chaos of boot camp, where camaraderie and conflict collide in equal measure.

Inspired by Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine, the series is created by Andy Parker (Tales of the City) and helmed by showrunner Jennifer Cecil (Umbrella AcademyOne Tree Hill). It also boasts the late Norman Lear as executive producer, adding a layer of legacy to its socially resonant storytelling.

The cast includes Vera Farmiga as Cameron’s chaotic mother Barbara, Max Parker as the haunted Sgt. Sullivan, and a diverse ensemble featuring Cedrick Cooper, Ana Ayora, Dominic Goodman, Kieron Moore and Rico Paris.

Mark your calendars: Boots marches onto Netflix on 9 October.
