Netflix to release powerful drama 'Queen of Coal', which follows Argentinian trans miner Carla Antonella Rodríguez

Netflix is to break new ground with its upcoming release, Queen of Coal, a powerful drama that celebrates resilience, identity, and the fight against entrenched gender norms. Inspired by real events, the series follows Carlita, a trans woman determined to pursue her dream of working in the coal mines of Patagonia - a profession historically dominated by men and steeped in superstition.

Starring Lux Pascal, acclaimed actor and LGBTQ+ advocate, the series offers a heartfelt portrayal of Carlita’s journey to overcome prejudice and systemic barriers. Directed by Agustina Macri and written by Erika Halvorsen and Mara Pescio, the production was filmed across Spain’s Basque Country and Argentina, and will premiere globally on Netflix on 19 December.

The story draws inspiration from Carla Antonella Rodríguez, widely recognised as the first trans woman miner in Río Turbio, Argentina. Netflix describes the drama as “a tribute to courage and authenticity,” aiming to spotlight the challenges faced by trans individuals in industries where tradition often trumps equality.

Early reactions from LGBTQ+ advocates have been overwhelmingly positive, praising the series for its bold storytelling and commitment to visibility. “Representation matters,” said one activist on social media. “Carlita’s story is a reminder that trans people belong everywhere - including spaces society has long tried to exclude them from.”
