Netflix confirms second season of Japanese gay dating show 'The Boyfriend'
Netflix has officially announced that The Boyfriend, Japan’s groundbreaking same-sex reality dating series, will return for a second season in the new year. The highly anticipated follow-up premieres globally on 13 January 2026, with episodes released in weekly batches over four weeks.
The new season relocates the show’s iconic “Green Room” from a summery seaside setting to the snowy landscapes of Hokkaido, promising a fresh backdrop for romance and self-discovery. Ten new men from diverse backgrounds will share a home for roughly two months, navigating the complexities of love and friendship while running a peppermint-themed coffee truck.
Season two will comprise 15 episodes, released as follows:
- 13 January: Episodes 1–6
- 20 January: Episodes 7–9
- 27 January: Episodes 10–12
- 3 February: Episodes 13–15
Returning to provide commentary are fan favourites Megumi, Chiaki Horan, Thelma Aoyama, Durian Lollobrigida, and Yoshimi Tokui, who will guide viewers through the emotional highs and lows of the series.
Since its debut in 2024, The Boyfriend has been praised for its tender portrayal of queer relationships and authentic storytelling. Executive producer Dai Ota promises that season two will continue to explore themes of compassion, growth, and connection, offering “more unique perspectives and backstories” against a serene winter backdrop.
The Boyfriend Season 2 streams exclusively on Netflix from 13 January.
