A mural is to be revealed for Egyptian human rights activist Sarah Hegazi in front of the 30 Grand Parade building, which crosses with Morley Street, on Saturday, September 5 from 12pm.
Sarah Hegazi took her own life while in exile in Canada. She claimed asylum there after being arrested, detained and tortured for raising the LGBTQ+ flag at a concert in Cairo in 2017.
At the mural’s reveal, speakers will highlight the LGBTQ+ struggle in Egypt (schedule TBA) and organisers are asking those interested in attending to bring a flower, water, a mask and a flag/sign, light a candle and leave a message for victims of rainbow struggles.

Please do not attend if you have symptoms or if you live with someone who has them. Equally, do not attend if you have interacted with someone who now has symptoms in the last two weeks or if you live with a vulnerable person or key worker. In addition, the organisers are running a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for the mural as the artists are donating with their efforts. To help cover the mural’s expenses CLICK HERE.

Scene was founded in Brighton in 1993, at a time when news stories about Pride protests were considered radical. Since then, Scene has remained proudly independent, building a platform for queer voices. Every subscription helps us to report on the stories that matter to LGBTQ+ people across the UK and beyond.
Your support funds our journalists and contributes to Pride Community Foundation’s grant-making and policy work.
