Menaka Guruswamy becomes India's first openly LGBTQ+ Member of Parliament

Menaka Guruswamy has made history by becoming India's first openly LGBTQ+ Member of Parliament, marking a significant step forward in the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights in the world’s largest democracy.

Guruswamy, a distinguished constitutional lawyer and public figure, is widely known for her role in the historic 2018 Supreme Court case that decriminalised homosexuality in India. As part of the legal team challenging Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, she helped secure a ruling that was celebrated both domestically and internationally as a turning point for civil liberties.

Her entry into Parliament now carries both symbolic and practical weight. Advocates say her presence in India’s legislature could help drive more inclusive policymaking and bring long-marginalised voices into national debates.

Speaking after her election victory, Guruswamy emphasised the broader significance of the moment. “This is not just about me,” she said. “It is about countless individuals across India who have long felt unseen or unheard. Democracy must reflect the diversity of its people.”

Reactions have poured in from across the political spectrum and civil society. Supporters have hailed her win as a breakthrough for visibility and representation, while some conservative voices have urged caution, reflecting the complex and often divided attitudes towards LGBTQ+ issues in India.

Despite the 2018 ruling, challenges remain. Discrimination, social stigma and gaps in legal protections continue to affect LGBTQ+ individuals across the country. Activists hope Guruswamy’s presence in Parliament will help push forward legislation on anti-discrimination protections, marriage equality and broader social reforms.
