London-based pop artist Rhian! digs deep on upcoming single 'My Place In This World'
Trinidad-born, London-based pop artist Rhian! digs deep on his upcoming single My Place In This World, a song about not fitting into the norms of society and finding the inner strength to persevere and survive.
His previous single, the tech-house banger I Need Somebody, was well received by DJs and got several plays on BBC Radio. My Place In This World displays his range as a songwriter who is not only able to create catchy club bangers but also emotionally potent ballads. He says it’s the most personal song that he’s ever written. The single was written and produced by Rhian! and long-time collaborator Massimo Braghieri and recorded at Intonoise Studio in London.
My Place In This World starts off very minimally produced with only a synth and Rhian! giving a very restraint, breathy vocal delivery. The track’s lyrics are sensitive and emotional. Rhian!’s vocals are front and centre throughout the track. He pulls back when needed and belts it out just when you want him to. The production builds gradually and compliments these peaks and valleys beautifully. “All I wanted was just to be free to live my life unapologetically,” he belts out on the track’s bridge. The spoken words in the track’s outro could very well become a daily mantra for members of the LGBTQ+ community; “I am enough and everything will be alright.”
Rhian! said: "My Place In This World reflects how I felt as a gay teenager growing up in a homophobic society. It is about my journey through life, many years searching for a place where I could feel like I could call a home and then finally realising that home is within me. It’s a song for anyone who ever felt like they don’t belong or fit in anywhere. It’s about perseverance, not listening to naysayers and realising that you are enough and do have a purpose here in this world."
It's been three years since Rhian! released his debut single I Need Your Love and he has released more than 10 singles since. Rhian!’s fans can look forward to him releasing an album next month encompassing a body of work that includes all of his singles as well as some previously unreleased material.
