LGBT Foundation and Gendered Intelligence working together to create National Trans Waiting List Support Service
LGBT Foundation and Gendered Intelligence have announced they are working together to create a National Trans Waiting List Support Service, which will launch later in the year.
Across England, around 31,000 people are waiting for their first NHS Gender Identity Clinic appointment, with average waits of five years. Evidence shows that 71% of people on NHS waiting lists say their health worsened while waiting.
Bringing together LGBT Foundation’s 50 years of trusted LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing support with Gendered Intelligence’s trans‑led expertise, this service will centre needs and experiences of trans and non‑binary people.
A statement released to the press states: "We know these are challenging times for our communities, and for years, much attention has been given to the pathways into and through Gender Identity Clinics. But the reality is that long waiting times can place people’s lives on hold. We want this announcement to be a sign of hope, that change is happening, that support is strengthening, and that people will not be left alone while they wait."
Details are still being shaped but the aim is to reduce the impact of long waiting times and ensure people feel supported, valued, and cared for until they receive the treatment they deserve.
Support is currently available through the Gendered Intelligence support line, a free and confidential service run by and for trans and non-binary people, in partnership with Nottingham Centre for Transgender Health, East of England Gender Clinic and the Laurels Exeter.
