In an era where trans voices are often sidelined or misrepresented, A Dance of Identity offers something rare: a deeply personal, unfiltered window into the lived experience of a trans woman in the UK. This bold and insightful feature documentary, filmed over six years, follows Sophie, a trans woman from Yorkshire, and her partner Sandi as they navigate love, identity, dance and resilience against a backdrop of rising hostility toward trans rights.
As the national debate around gender intensifies, Sophie’s story cuts through the noise. Her determination to dance female ballet roles, to live an ordinary family life, and to prepare her body for gender-affirming surgery – despite rising hostility and eroding legal protections – creates a narrative of quiet resistance and deep humanity.

“This beautifully shot film gives a rare insight of what it’s really like to be transgender in the UK today. It’s poignant, funny and moving as well as being hard-hitting and truthful.”— Katie Neeves, Founder of Cool2BTrans
At its core, A Dance of Identity is a platform for trans voices and their families to speak for themselves—honestly, emotionally, and without interruption. It captures not just a personal journey, but the broader, ongoing struggle for acceptance and equality in the UK.
To bring this essential film to audiences, the filmmakers are launching a Kickstarter campaign on 13 May. Funds raised will go directly toward editing and completing postproduction on the film and launching a cinema and impact campaign across the UK and beyond.
