Kansas City, Missouri, has once again demonstrated its commitment to inclusivity by earning a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2025 Municipal Equality Index (MEI). This marks the fifth consecutive year the city has achieved this distinction, reinforcing its reputation as a national leader in LGBTQ+ equality.
The MEI is the only nationwide assessment of how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are for LGBTQ+ residents. Cities are evaluated across five key areas: non-discrimination laws, municipal employment practices, services and programmes, law enforcement, and leadership on LGBTQ+ issues.
Mayor Quinton Lucas celebrated the achievement, stating: "Kansas City’s commitment to equality for all will never waver. At a time when many LGBTQ Americans are seeing their rights challenged, their safety questioned, and their existence undermined, Kansas City will never stop protecting and uplifting our LGBTQ community."
City Manager Mario Vasquez echoed this sentiment, highlighting the collaborative effort behind the accolade: "This recognition reflects the work of so many across our organisation who are dedicated to making Kansas City a welcoming and equitable place for everyone. We are proud of the efforts we have made to ensure all residents can live, work and thrive in a community that values dignity, fairness and respect."
While the perfect score is a significant achievement, advocates note that continued progress is essential, particularly in supporting vulnerable LGBTQ+ populations and expanding trans-inclusive benefits.
