Acclaimed drag performer and Broadway star Jinkx Monsoon has taken aim at TERF J.K. Rowling in a biting and theatrical critique that’s gone viral across social media, reigniting debate around the author’s controversial stance on trans rights.

In a newly released teaser from her upcoming appearance on satirical late-night talk show Ziwe, Monsoon responded to a tongue-in-cheek question about whether Rowling would make a good Roxy Hart in Chicago. What followed was a satirical takedown of what Monsoon described as the “hypocrisy” in Rowling’s views on gender identity.

Feigning confusion and adopting a faux-drunken persona, Monsoon quipped, “Who is Jake? Who is he? Jake Hay Rowling?” When corrected by host Ziwe that Rowling is a woman, Monsoon deadpanned, “Oh, dear. That is not a feminine name in the slightest”.

The performer then pivoted to a more pointed critique, referencing Rowling’s use of initials in her pen name. “I have to presume that J.K. Rowling was unsatisfied with the way that the world saw her, and then she transitioned herself into a new personality so that the world would perceive her the way she wanted to be perceived,” Monsoon said, highlighting what she sees as a contradiction in Rowling’s public stance on gender identity.

Rowling has faced sustained criticism in recent years for her opposition to trans-inclusive legislation, including her support for legal definitions of womanhood based solely on biological sex. Her comments have sparked backlash from LGBTQ+ advocates, celebrities, and fans alike.

Monsoon’s remarks have been widely praised online for their wit and incisiveness, with many lauding her for using humour to challenge transphobia in the public sphere. Many users described her performance as “iconic,” “brilliant,” and “a masterclass in satire.”
