Brighton is marking International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on Tuesday, May, 17, 2016. May 17 commemorates the day in 1990 the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental diseases.
Brighton marks International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) this evening, Tuesday, May, 17, 2016.
May 17 commemorates the day in 1990 the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental diseases.
In 86 countries globally, homosexual acts are illegal while in many countries lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and those who identify as trans are often murdered simply for their sexuality or gender identity.
Go along and celebrate LGBT lives around the globe.
Hosted by the volunteers of the Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum.
An alfresco evening of LGBT excellence which will include:
♦ Poetry from local poet Alice Denny
♦ Live music from the Rainbow Chorus
♦ A minute’s ‘noise’ to remember the international victims of homo, bi and transphobic violence; (so bring a whistle, horn, bell, tambourine, trombone etc. to make some noise!)
Green councillors will be attending the event. Convenor of the Green Group on Brighton and Hove City Council, Cllr Phélim Mac Cafferty said: “In the last two weeks there have been shocking homophobic attacks in our city: this is completely unacceptable. On International Day against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia our determination to combat this hatred must be strengthened. Brighton and Hove belongs to us all and the struggle to make our city safe for all residents continues. Greens are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with LGBT communities both here and abroad against discrimination and intimidation.
“In Brighton and Hove it is essential that we work together to stamp out discrimination and violence against the LGBT community. Green Party Councillors have a long track record of tackling discrimination and promoting equality, and will continue to unapologetically support the right for all our residents to live free from hate and fear.”
Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven, said: “There has been great progress on LGBT rights over the past 25 years but, as demonstrated by recent homophobic attacks here in Brighton, there is still more to be done.
“I am proud to be a strong voice for the many LGBT people in Brighton and I will continue to stand up for their rights and continue to press for equality in the UK and across the world.”
