Country music legend Dolly Parton has been officially named a Guinness World Records Icon, a prestigious title awarded in celebration of the organisation’s 70th anniversary. The honour recognises Parton’s extraordinary career and her 11 record-breaking achievements, cementing her status as one of the most influential figures in music history.
The 79-year-old singer-songwriter and gay icon, known for timeless hits such as Jolene and 9 to 5, received the golden certificate at her Nashville studio. “Oh, I surely didn’t break that many records,” she remarked modestly upon seeing the framed accolades.
Among her record-breaking accomplishments are the most consecutive decades with Top 10 albums on the Billboard Country Chart, the most studio albums released by a female country artist, and the longest span of No.1 hits on the US Top Country Albums chart. She also holds the distinction of being the first country singer nominated for an EGOT - Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
Beyond her musical achievements, Parton’s philanthropic work has earned global admiration. Her Imagination Library, which provides free books to children worldwide, and her contributions to education, poverty relief, and medical research were highlighted by Guinness World Records as key reasons for her selection.
Editor-in-chief Craig Glenday praised her as “a living legend” whose impact “extends far beyond the musical world.” Parton now joins an elite group of previous Icon recipients, including Beyoncé, Sir Elton John and Sir Paul McCartney.
Parton’s influence also resonates deeply within the LGBTQ+ community, where she is celebrated as a gay icon. Her flamboyant style, unapologetic individuality, and unwavering support for equality have made her a beloved figure among fans of all backgrounds. She has long championed inclusivity and kindness, famously saying, “It’s not my place to judge. Everybody’s got a right to be who they are.”
